What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
I really enjoyed hearing from Dorothy and how the 'Create' segment of the Manaiakalani pedagogy doesn't just involve being online using digital tools, but the whole body including spirituality. I took from her discussion that it is about hooking learners and teachers in. It is about using one's creativity where learning can also occur. This made me think about a boy I knew who during lockdown created and dug a trench in his backyard when learning about the ANZACS. For me as a kaiako it has made me realise that I need to be using and creating more multi sensory experiences, SISOMO for the learners I teach.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Today was another intensive day, but I really enjoyed being able to work from home, especially with the weather being terrible and cold outside. It brought back memories from lockdown for me. I got a little frustrated towards the end of the day when I kept getting kicked out of the Meet on blogging. I tried closing tabs, and then the computer would just shut down on me forcing me to restart and rejoin. I got there in the end though. I really liked how I can have collaborative playlists with my team and will be setting this up when i get back to kura. It will be perfect for having and collaborating a range of Māori waiata playlists and other things we can all access. Particularly if someone is away from kura.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Today I found the session on Google Drawings really exciting as I haven't really utilised this tool to it's full potential with the learners in my class. I am definitely going to go through the same process we went through today with my class when I get back to school. Below is my finished product which I have uploaded to my professional blog.
I also thoroughly enjoyed and got lots out of Sharon's session on making slides more engaging, this will save me hours in terms of creating engaging slides for the students I teach. Working smarter, not harder. I work alongside an amazing, talented kaiako who also has skills in this field who I can get ideas from. I will be downloading the MOTE chrome extension also as this will help support my struggling learners. I didn't know you could add to outside of the slide either another useful tip and trick to support my learners more. Below is a link to an example of an engaging slide that I created using transparent backgrounds and pictures with video links.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
I am feeling more and more confident as the course goes on and I love the fact that it is rewindable learning for me also, especially if I missed something. I am more excited about working with my students in this digital world and sharing the skills I have learnt with them. Even though my 16 year old son gives me a hard time saying I learnt that when I was 7 or 13. I can see how the skills I learn on this course will save me hours of time, giving me more time in my personal life with my family.
